Every purchase is a vote – Fashion waste to landfill or recycle

Environmental awareness is on the rise. People advocate green life and reduce the activities that harm our planet. When talking about environmental issues, the first one comes to mind is traffic pollution – As the government spends lots of money on educating the public that we should choose public transportation over driving our own car. However, clothing and fashion do also bring serious harm to our environment as well as a bunch of waste, which we often neglect.

The price of your bag is not just the one shown on the receipt. Our planet pays for it too. The cost to the environment is higher than you ever imagined.

The fashion industry is the second-largest consumer of the world’s water supply, which uses 93 billion cubic meters of water. This amount of water is sufficient to meet the consumption needs of five million people. Around 20 % of wastewater worldwide comes from fabric dyeing and treatment.

The fashion industry is responsible for 10% of annual global carbon emissions, you may have no idea how serious that is, but as a matter of fact, it is more than all international flights and maritime shipping produced.

At this pace, we foresee the fashion industry’s greenhouse gas emissions will surge more than 50 % by 2030.

Fast fashion brings up a huge waste

Fast fashion increases the number of styles and collections of clothing. The global consumption of textiles is 62 million tonnes per year. It is predicted that the consumption of textiles will reach to102 million tonnes by 2030.

Fast fashion leads to a significant increase in fashion waste. The average consumer is buying more clothes (as well as bags), wearing them less, and creating more waste.

Fashion trends change every month. Many companies still burn millions of dollars of unsold fashion accessories when the style is out of style. Those accessories end up on the cutting room floor, rather than recycling.

Our earth has to digest the waste. 87% of total fiber input used for the fashion accessories is incinerated or disposed in a landfill. Every year, we dump half a million tons of plastic microfibers into the ocean, which is equivalent to 50 billion plastic bottles. Microfibers cannot be extracted from the water, and they can spread throughout the food chain.

Huge cost, huh? But is it worth it?

The more bags you buy, the less frequent you use them. This is more extreme in Western countries, such as the US. China is catching up.

The fast fashion trend means fashion accessories brands are now producing almost twice as many collections per year than they were before 2000.

Comparing with the last decade, textile waste in US has increased tremendously from 9.48 million tons to 17.03 million tons from 2000 to 2018. Although part of the textile waste is being recycled or used as energy recovery recently, the number is still far left behind from dumped to landfill.
